ISRAEL / HAMAS :THE VOCABULARY DOESN'T FIT

The news regarding Gaza is becoming a treacherous slalom. The Middle East could figure in Dante's opus as hell. Besides it is becoming a tale of lies and sophisms.

After the tragedy of October 7th, the events followed a rightful path of sorrow and indignation. There was no ambiguity in siding with the aggrieved party, even with the knowledge that a merciless retaliation would follow.

From the start there was, however, a moral and historical confusion. The word "war" came up while it is not applicable to a terrorist organization which is not a state, obviously. The situation doesn't fit in the praxis or in the conventions that are supposed to rule warfare, which only exist between states who are accordingly under some obligations agreed upon in the pertinent Geneva conventions.

Hamas is a terrorist hybrid of unsavory individuals who are not bound by anything other than a fanatical mindset. Israel is entitled to take action and to liberate the hostages. That this cannot be achieved without collateral damage is unavoidable.

It is hard however to remain master of consequence. Hamas is the enemy and should neither be spared nor respected. However it is not a "belligerent". It is a freakish grouping with few friends, that also embarrasses moderate Arab states. Besides, it ruled Gaza as a blind experiment with no exit.

Unfortunately Israel lost self-control. The initial purpose was corrupted by overdrive and by the P.M.'s ulterior, selfish considerations. By over expanding the range of military might, he unleashed a nihilistic force upon civilians who are double- trapped, by Hamas first and by Israel now. He also undermines Israel's former credibility in the world, embarrassing Europeans and the US. 

There is a lot of talk about the rise of anti-Semitism. Actually there is an analogy with what happened during the Vietnam War or the Algeria unrest. The manifestations were less anti- American or anti-French than mostly a primary reaction directed against the abuse of power. The manifestations on campus in Europe or the US today are not directed against the Jews but against Israel. The indiscriminate military action and the absolute failure to come to terms with the two states solution only increase Israel's isolation. It has lost its added value in the region. The Gulf States look better, the world gave up looking at Tel Aviv and only sees the settlers.

President Sadat would skip a historical handshake under the current circumstances. President Biden might think twice before meeting Netanjahu now. The former US Secretary of State James Baker already found fault with Netanjahu. Imagine how the Biden administration must consider him now. 

CONFLUENCE ET EGAREMENT ENTRE GENERATIONS

Le récent débat entre le P.M. français et le chef de file du R.N. était révélateur. L'un et l'autre sont jeunes et ambitieux et ils réusissent surtout a éviter que leur conversation ne dégénère comme celà était le cas avec les anciens. Si les différends restent entiers, le contact n'est pas compromis par l'invective. Ils sont apparus comme les pôles opposés d'un systhème qui n'est pas remis en cause. Le narratif est différent mais la grammaire demeure. La France a en la personne de Gabriel Attal un P.M. qui ne manquera pas de faire des envieux. Jordan Bardella a pour sa part sorti le Rassemblent National de son parcours "infréquentable". 

La France du président Emmanuel Macron est devenue première dans le peleton Européen. Il réussit à débarasser la présidence de l'aspect souvent paternaliste propre à la 5ème république. Jusqu'à présent il semble bien suivi par ses pairs qui doivent néanmoins se trouver à l'étroit dans un partage de pouvoir avec un président et un P.M. jeunes. Le Rassemblenent national est aussi passé par là . Marine Le Pen a trouvé en Jordan Bardella une personnalité jeune qui sait se mesurer à d'autres grace aussi à un vocabulaire débarassé des clichés de l'ancienne extrème droite.

Reste à savoir si le Duumvirat français gardera le cap. Il fait des jaloux et il est probable que Macron voudra tôt ou tard intervenir pour que l'étoile d'Attal ne vienne pas perturber le système solaire existant dans l'Elysée. Les Européens cachent mal leur envie. Seule la P.M. Italienne qui fréquente sans doute les écrits de Machiavel se distingue dans le Conseil Européen DOA (death on arrival).

Les Etats-Unis présentent une autre situation. Le président, qui a les intentions justes, viellit en direct. Le candidat républicain est un pantin ,au demeurant dangereux. Biden n'est plus compréhensible et Trump n'est plus supportable. Le premier a un soutien résigné, le dernier cherche un(e) candidat(e) vice président dans la marée noire ou se retrouvent les Trumpiens, sexe et hystérie confondus. Celà promet.

Si Trump devait emporter les présidentielles, le pire deviendrait possible et rien ne semble porteur du meilleur. Il ne faut pas imaginer les scénarios les plus absurdes mais il faut les garder à l'esprit. Après son pas de deux avec le président nord Coréen Trump a pris gout aux partenaires"surprenants".

Les prochaines élections européennes se dérouleront dans un climat politique chargé. Il y a double influence : le populisme à l'intérieur et les faux monnayeurs à l'extérieur. En plus, le Parlement Européen, pavé de bonnes intentions lors de sa création, est devenu un autre "machin"(terme emprunté au général de Gaulle) qui a tout pour ne pas emballer. Rassemblant des "have been",ces "bourgeois de Calais" continuent leur triste va et vient enre Bruxelles et Strassbourg sans que qui que se soit s'en émeuve.

Au moins le Congès américain arrive encore à'étonner. Les numéros de trapèze s'y succèdent. Les Congresswomen républicaines semblent s'être arrogées le trophée du Trumpisme le plus agressif. Elles devraient pourtant se préparer pour l'une ou l'autre surprise que Poutine et Co. leur préparent cette annèe de tous les dangers. La grace a plié bagages, comme l'intelligence.

Bah, les parapluies de Cherbourg sont rangés, à jamais ?

LES DANGERS DU DEDANS ET DU DEHORS

Ce printemps triste est annonciateur d' une saison de plomb. Rien n'apparait qui puisse tant soit peu apporter appaisement ou confiance. A Paris les jeux olympiques qui devraient bénéficier d'un cadre et d'un savoir-faire exceptionnels se dérouleront sous haute surveillance, hélàs. L'Europe est de toute façon prise dans un engrenage qui devient vraiment menaçant. La tentative d'assassinat du premier ministre  Slovaque vient encore de réanimer les fantômes de l'histoire. On sait que les frontières orientales de l'UE peuvent devenir le théatre d'interventions malignes. Au demeurant le populisme qui existe à l'est a déjà son répondant à l'Ouest, ce qui crée des diagonales qui bouleversent les équilibres existants.

La Russie et la Chine se félicitent de ce changement. L'Iran est leur meilleur suppôt, D'autres pays préfèrent désormais garder leur distance par rapport à des situations conflictuelles qu'ils préfèrent ignorer. L'Inde, le Bresil, l'Indonésie et autres BRICS n'entendent pas se laisser entrainer dans des situations qui freineraient leurs priorités économiques. Les Etats-Unis ont du mal à garder le contrôle de plusieurs théatres qui requièrent un suivi sur mesure. Les alliés sont aussi timorés, voyant un président qui trébuche et un autre, candidat, qui inquiète.

L'Occident a perdu l'hégémonie normative. Il s'en suit que le désordre s'installe et que les alliances se fragilisent. Mème Israel qui doit tout à l'Occident, en premier lieu aux Etats-Unis, est devenu un partenaire ingrat, peu fiable. La France reste la référence  pour pour mais combien de temps encore ?

Partout  les élections, en Europe déjà, aux Etats-Unis peut être, suivent le mème scénario de dérive vers une droite anti intellectuelle, privilégiant le court terme. Qu'un pays comme les Pays-Bas avec sa tradition de tolérance et de pluralisme se soit tourné vers la droite laisse rêveur. On ne peut exclure qu'à l'avenir des mouvements et des situations, téléguidés de l'extérieur se multiplieront. Tôt ou tard il faudra trancher si un pays allié mais retort peut continuer une relation comme si de rien n'était. Les baise-mains d'Orban ne doivent pas fairer illusion. L'attentat en Slovaquie rappelle Sarajevo, la Georgie prend peur, la Serbie menace...

Plus que jamais il faut se protéger de la naiveté qui est souvent l'interface de la fadeur. La Belgique "héberge" l'OTAN mais n'est pas capable de payer sa contribution et a une armée en carton. Celà est honteux...Comment est-ce possible,voir mème politiquement défendable ? 

Il y a assez d'évènements inquiétants proches et éloignés qui devraient pourtant alarmer . Si les Etats-Unis devaient élire Trump il sera déjà trop tard pour envisager ce qui aurait du changer il ya des années déjà. Si l'Ukraine devait perdre du terrain, c'est l'UE qui se retrouvera sur le banc des accusés. Laisser le nihilisme achever son parcours achèvera un dessein qu'il eut fallu mieux protéger.

WOKE AS RECIPE ON RAINY AND OTHER DAYS

History is made of many layers. There have been repeats, recalls, surprises, traps. Nowadays every situation seems to receive the déjà vu treatment, but if the precedent were that clear, it remains a mystery why the cure, which should be equally evident, remains elusive. The observer of the international turmoil is no longer confronted by the former self-evident binary spread. The world has turned rogue.

Strange bedfellows appear, unintended similarities occur. The EU for instance suddenly appears sharing an unfortunate pole position with... Taiwan. Both feel under the spell of larger powers, Russia for Western Europe and China for Taiwan. Both count on the American shield to keep the menace at bay. Their faith in the USA is a relic from the past, which is losing its relevance by the day.

America is no longer the unipolar guarantor of a global unifying codex. Other powers rise or are making their entrance. Both the EU and Taiwan confuse posture with reality. They often underestimate the viciousness of the threat and the consequential changes that occur everywhere.

Observers  cannot stop talking about the US presidential elections between two "left overs" from the past. America is changing, not for the better, while earlier commitments only relate to the older generations. Youth start to look at Europe as an occasional arrogant, not very entertaining relic from the past. Neither do they see what the fuss about a far away Chinese family feud is all about. They just care about China's aggressive trade war, while still buying its products.

The everywhere present, invasive phone rules the waves and the psyche worldwide, while the rise of A.I. is opening the gates for the many who don't fall for "Proustian remembrance". Taylor Swift has more legions than anyone worldwide.  What would Stalin say?

Some leaders appear to be conscious of the changing socio- strategic "time zone", but their hazardous clairvoyance doesn't find many takers. People live unwillingly with Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and more of the same and do not want to deal with an even heavier carload. They want to go for a holiday in hell with traffic, bad service, overbooked misery, rather than to be reminded of the expanding parameters of trouble at home.

There is not much one can do. Better think twice before bringing children into this mess and enjoy what is left of the climate before the arrival of unfriendly skies. If one is out of sync with what is happening there is a distraction in engaging the neighbor on the topic of woke...it always works, since so few, if any, have a clue regarding what it all is about...plus ca change ?!

US UNIVERSITIES IN TURMOIL

Students in America are voicing their anger about Israel's intervention in Gaza. This unrest recalls similar situations during the Vietnam times.

It is obvious that PM Netanjahu's policies are highly unpopular in the world. The atrocities of Hamas don't give Israel a blank check to compete for a horror medal.

Hamas didn't need October 7 to further damage its reputation. Israel had every right to retaliate. Unfortunately it went too far and what is left of Gaza will forever be a stain that cannot be redeemed. That the Jews, who have suffered the worst tragedy in human history maybe, continue their often indiscriminate killing spree is hard to rationalize.

The disbelief worldwide shouldn't surprise anyone. The fate of the hostages requires action, negotiation, you name it.  Everything must be done, considered, to give them back their dignity and freedom. Likewise, they should be spared the trauma of having to walk over the bodies of Palestinians, while returning to the freedom they deserve.

The various manifestations in universities obey to a variety of  causes. There existed a general malaise already. The causes are multiple, almost competing with one another. To a certain extent Gaza is more an anchor for many pre-existing frustrations that had no real outlet before. Most of the students who manifest bona fide are not anti-semitic, fortunately. They are also being manipulated by the usual anarchists, who just pursue some nihilistic agenda. Many feel bewildered and cheated in this A.I. dawn. 

Israel is losing its former exceptionalism and is becoming a country that no longer fits in its existential narrative. The death and the debris in Gaza are the shroud that covers its bygone soul.

Manifestations will continue. The American Secretary of State, together with many Arab leaders who are showing restraint, deserve respect for keeping Sisyphus' boulder rolling. The Ukrainian tragedy, the climate aberrations, the hunger archipelagos, add even more negatives to the mood. People manifest for a cause but the origin of the global neurasthenia is to be found everywhere. The internecine genie is out of the bottle. We have entered the age of depression.
