HADJA LAHBIB MININISTRE DES AFFAIRES ETRANGERES BELGE

Madame Lahbib nouvelle Ministre des Affaires Etrangères Belge est en premier lieu l'étonnant choix de Georges Louis Boucher, président du MR .

Cette désignation a surpris sans convaicre, étonné sans séduire.

Son modeste apparition dans le journal RTL (plus connu pour son provincialisme primaire que pour sa pertinence) était pathétique.

Les problèmes internationaux s'accumulent et requièrent des acteurs informés. Le Premier Ministre Belge s'est vu imposer par un président de parti une personnalité qui le déssert plus qu'elle ne le sert. Déjà le profil international de la Belgique est nul. Ce n'est pas la nouvelle gaffe avec le drapeau néerlandais mis à l'envers dans le bureau dAlexander De Croo qui réhaussera son prestige.

Pendant ce temps le Premier Ministre des Pays Bas est reçu à la Maison Blanche. Avec Madame Lahbib dans ses bagages le Premier Ministre Belge risque de devoir attendre son tour.

Comme quoi le choix Borain n'est pas garantie de succès.

OLIVIER VANDECASTEELE

Olivier Vandecasteele zit vast in  Iran in omstandigheden die wij niet kennen en voor redenen die ons onbekend blijven. De info die sporadisch overkomt is onheilspellend.

Alle kanalen of druk die de overheid nog kan mobiliseren  blijven zonder gevolg. De Belgische betrokken ministers hebben noch het internationaal profiel noch de middelen om hard te negocieren . De Belgische Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken werd in haar positie neergezet door de onverantwoorde keuze van een partijvoorzitter die zo het bewijs leverde dat hij mist aan elementaire  gravitas.

Het valt te zien of het grondwettelijk hof nog kan terugkomen op een beslissing die waarschijnlijk juridisch de juiste was in de bestaande rechtsorde maar politiek ongelukkig is. De gevangenenruil is weinig aantrkkelijk maar een alternatief is er waarschijnlijk niet.

Iran is een onbetrouwbare partner die samen met enkele trawanten van dezelde soort elke deontologie saboteert. Het is onsmakelijk om met dit soort regime te moeten onderhandelen, maar het is ook nu eenmaal zo dat dit "soort" unholy creepy actors zich verspreid en dat de beschaving geen ander alternatief heeft dan zijn neus op te trekken en toch een moeilijk gesprek te moeten  voeren.

Olivier Vandecasteele verdient alle denkbare hulp. Zijn vrijlating kan ook aantonen dat Belgie nog moreel kan optreden en zijn dividend van respect mag incasseren, wereldwijd.

THE GERMAN ALLY

Ukraine's allies gathered in Germany to consider additional support for Ukraine. The meeting went well if one chooses to forego the German decision not to agree with the delivery of its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. President Zelensky begged for these tanks but the German chancellor remained tone-deaf. He is supposedly worried that German tanks so close to the Russian border might recall World War II bad memories. This type of Angst might fit German anxiety but it is suspect given recent past situations where the Germans almost implored for measurable close American support.

Germany has a long hate/love relationship with Russia: Brest Litovsk, Rapallo, the non-aggression pact Hitler/Stalin, the Ost politik, Gerhard Schroder, Angela Merkel.  There is something like a perverse attraction between these countries, maybe because they both score low in the popularity rate.

The American Secretary of Defense Lloyd J.Austin III tried to blur the bad mood but Germany's partners remain worried. The  Ukrainians are understandably unhappy.  Germany's Chancellor Scholz often gives the impression of letting his thinking be hostage to his size:  small. 

NATO doesn't need another flash point or hardly-contained resentment. Germany has entered the flock of EU weak governments at an inauspicious time, when the United States will be entering their periodic presidential election drama. The EU, left to its own devices, might choose to behave yet again as children fighting over a rattle. 

UKRAINE' S AGONY

The situation in Ukraine cries for help. The helicopter crash yesterday only ads to the drama. Besides, it deprives President Zelensky of a trusted, experienced ally.

The Russians continue on their war crime path. The missile strike in Dnipro only confirms Putin's indifference to pain inflicted at random on a population that is guilty of nothing else but the legitimate claim for peace and to be left alone. History was never mild for Ukraine and the Crimean peninsula. Russia was then, as it is now, a relentless unreliable power. These were the times of  the lady with the lamp, Florence Nightingale, who started reforming the care for the wounded in the mid-19th century...nowadays there is neither a lady nor a lamp left, and Ukrainians survive in unspeakable conditions. 

How long does an innocent country have to be subjected to "war crimes" en direct before the proper weaponry is sent and the more ambiguous restraints, range and caliber are lifted? The Russians and their Wagner allies know no mercy or respect, why should the West measure its commitment?

Examples abound everywhere which give ample proof that half- baked containment on the back of the victims only increases the  violence of  the perpetrator.  Besides, the bad actors around might take note of the West's timidity and consider it as a pass for unleashing their even worse intentions.

PALEIZENSTRAAT BRUSSEL

Vluchteligen en Asielzoekers overleven in vreselijke omstandigheden in het berucht gekraakt pand Paleizenstraat.

De situatie riskeert uit de hand te lopen. Hygiene, bevoorrading, veilighheid dreigen op korte termijn definitief uit de hand te lopen.

De regering geeft de indruk niet te weten  hoe zij de op hol  geslagen nachtmerrie nog kan bijsturen. De bevoegde Staatssecretaris moet dringend uitkijken naar nieuwe brilglazen want anders moet ze haar verantwoordelijkheid opnemen voor die onaanvaardbare hel.

Als een welvaartstaat niet ingrijpt dan verdient hij indeeerdaad zelf verantwoording te moeten geven. Het ontbreken aan elke menselijke bekommernis toont opnieuw aan dat dit land - alle nutteloze partijen en regeringen en gemeentes inclusief- een ''failed state'' wordt.

HARRY (AGAIN)

There is a lot of buzz regarding Prince Harry's upcoming book. One shouldn't judge a book by its cover:  the author might be wise not to "over talk" and beware of letting his story be abducted before it enters the public domain.

Everyone who has been confronted by a catastrophic tragedy copes in his or her own way. Grief is one of the most valuable possessions we carry through life.

Prince Harry chose his own catharsis. It has been remarked that this move is well- paid-for.  Indeed.  He got rid of the scent of mothballs that is the warning sign for every approaching Windsor. His mother paid the price for attempting to normalize the grotesque.

Harry and Meghan should try to rekindle with their more private, happy days. Rehashing scores for too long looks as if one wants the independence he is entitled to without totally giving up the position he was born into. Beware of precedent and avoid both the Duke of Windsor-trap or the Vanity Fair mirror.

The world needs some form of happiness without a preordained script.

VIVALDI WAAR BENT U ?

The Vivaldi regering wordt bijna onzichtbaar. Zij schippert moeizaam door de Doggerbank van problemen, die ze pijnlijk ontwijkt maar niet langer aanspreekt.

Alexander De Coo is een gentleman, wat hem niet spaart van een dosis cynisme. Zijn regering heeft enkele niet oninteressante Ministers zoals Vincent Van Petegen, Thomas Dermine, Frans Vandenbrocke, Tinne Van der Straeten. Er zit ook een saboteur tussen , Karine Lalieux.

De problemen stapelen zich uitzichtloos op :  begroting, pensioenen, loonpolitiek, kernenergie, klimaat/ milieu, NAVO bijdrage enzv. Er moet werk worden gemaakt voor een pragmatische herfederalisering, om te vermijden dat de "deelstaten" en sommige van hun minder aantrekkelijke vertengenwoorigers voor het absurde en het verleden kiezen.

Het is moeilijk een aantal knopen door te hakken met een regering die samengesteld is met onderliggende tegenstrijdige agendas. Andersom is een wisseloplossing moeilijk te vinden met partijen die ekonomisch financieel aanvaardbaar zijn maar die blijven vasthouden aan hun Heimat theologie. In Belgie lopen de besturen in het Noorden en in het Zuiden verloren in voorbijgestreefde scenarios en gewoontes. De goedendag werd opgegraven  in Vlaanderen en in Wallonie kijkt men zich blind op een verpauperde omgeving en een strukturele corruptie.

De federale regering moet naar spoedzorg of er mee op houden. Ik durf mij niet meer voorstellen wat de Premier moet denken over deze trage teleurgang. Stel U voor wat Herman De Croo aan zijn zoon allemmal zegt.... Het wordt vooral tijd dat de inwoners van dit land eindelijk opnieuw iets zien bewegen. Symbolen zijn niet te onderschatten. Belgie ziet er nu uit als de kasseien ramp rond het koninklijk paleis en de Zavel (een schandaal) of de afschuwelijke ordening binnen het Brussels middeleeuws kluwen. De indruk bestaat dat zelf de aetificiele intelligentie nooit in Zaventem is geland.

Het land heeft naar 2030 eindelijk een toekomstgericht "projet mobilisateur" nodig. Thomas Dermine kan dit best op zich nemen maar de tijd dringt.

KEVIN MCCARTHY NEW SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE

After the formidable Nancy Pelosi, the House gets a Republican at the helm. This new unappealing, unprincipled speaker is more a dummy for Rep. Jim Jordan, Ohio Republican and attack dog for the ultra-right. Remember him from the Benghazi hearings?

McCarthy had to swallow every indignity to get there and showed a willingness to be the accomplice of any crazy, wanting to revert to the mayhem of the old Trump days. The GOP has only one agenda: Torch!   Jordan knows very well which buttons to pull to infuriate the Democrats. He is not shy from using gutter talk or body language (he is a former wrestler after all) in his theatrics. He is not impressed by decorum or civility.

The Biden administration looks far too polite and sophisticated to enter the slugfest. Americans are getting slowly fed up with the dejà vu Trump vulgarity. The current president might not be inspiring but he is reversing political addiction to lies and conspiracy lunacy.

Many important issues (health, migration, Ukraine, China...) require a deft, experienced savoir faire which is a concept that is too hard to spell for the political rednecks in the GOP. The few frequentable Republicans left are on the way out.

We can expect the Rule of Chaos to invade our minds yet again. This might only benefit the Democrats in the end as long as they resist a burn-out. They must be wary not to fall into the trap of outrage. Hillary Clinton's sparing with Jordan should be a must watch for Democrats. A great vade mecum for how to keep cool, have self control and defeat the enemy with contempt.

BEWARE OF GREEKS BEARING GIFTS (VIRGIL)

Putin suggested a cease-fire for orthodox Christmas, thereby ignoring that most Ukrainians have switched already to the Western calendar. The trap obeyed the usual Russian script:  unsophisticated, high on octane, low on morals.

The famous historic Christmas pause between French and German troupes during World War I will not be repeated.

Russia is losing by not winning. The Red Square parades and generals cannot hide the fact that the nefarious force on view is strong on bombast but weak on accuracy. The Russian myth as represented by Putin is not unlike the Titanic, more bulk than readiness. Meanwhile, the bleeding and starving of Ukraine continues. The West, mostly the US, is actively upgrading its military help. The summit with the EU next month should better be impressive by a quantitative/qualitative Marshall Plan than by the photo-ops it will provide. 

It is unfortunate that the EU finds itself in a bind. Ukraine is both the patient in need and the unwilling cause of Europe's current economic downfall, which is mostly caused by Russia's energy blackmail, food manipulation and Germany's former gullibility.

This war sent globalization to the scaffold.  It sent the rationale for original alignments packing and only multiplies opportunistic, cynical coming togethers of countries that might well be on each other's throats tomorrow. Some fear a Russia/China axis for the ages. They had better study history and realize that such a formula benefits neither the drowned nor the rescuer. China has its hands full with covid and an ailing economy. Russia has arsenals and no GDP.

The West should stop apologizing and reclaim the high ground where it belongs. Masochism is wrong and with all its imperfections, the West has more staying- power than the hybrids East and the cheated South. Finally, it is about time to call the spades for what they are in Iran, North Korea, the bluff Emirates and the religious deranged. Therefore Ukraine has become our soul and we better live up to its cry for support.
