UKRAINE: LONG YEARS INTO NIGHT

The usual well-meaning suspects spent a day in Kiev, marking two years of relentless slaughter by Putin & Co.  This sad- looking group appeared lost in a decor that is actually a crime scene. The Italian P.M. acted as if she were hallucinating. The president of the Commission was, as always, candid and to the point.

The malaise cannot be denied. The Ukrainians are tired, the Europeans waiver between the best intentions and a sobering realization, the Americans are bound by their own self-defeating nightmares.

There is no light at the end of this tunnel. It looks impossible to find a way out since the aggressor makes any considered outcome a no-way zone before it reaches the negotiation table. Putin's frightening hostile anamorphic is alive. It is also shredding any form of prior agreed-to arms control, nuclear restraint or implementation of the Helsinki agreements.

Everybody is waiting for the outcome of the US presidential elections. Trump is already Europe's nightmare. He is no longer game for his former ego trips to the EU or the UK. Europeans are stuck in the middle with a possible future American president they despise and a Russian they fear.

In the current situation, the EU must regroup around a military strategy which can act as a deterrent. It cannot permit a repeat of the Ukrainian scenario, wherein armaments arrive too late and stocks are depleted. Sometimes it looks like a replay of events in the late thirties, more Chamberlain than Churchill. President Biden is hostage to a Republican cabal that stands in the way of meaningful action. The right in America care more for the unborn than for the dying.

The fate of Navalny feels already like the somber score of a Requiem. Putin doesn't mind posing as Ivan or Peter but he looks more like a dead soul out of Gogol. This doesn't make him less dangerous. In his quantitative mindset there is no room for  emotion. He acts beset with hatreds and resentment, not unlike Trump. The EU's surroundings have become a darker place, deserted by the better angels. The rising storms East and South  are ominous. The selfish aberrations of  "partners" like Hungary or Israel become equally hard to endure. Patience is running low and the confidence deficit is climbing fast.

The Economist asks "Is Europe ready?" The answer is an unambiguous NO.

SANDA DIA

De heise na de uitspraak in de zaak Nathan Vandergunst, aka Acid, was te verwachten. Dit vonnis dat op zijn minst betwisbaar is, toont opnieuw aan hoe diep de kloof is die ontstond na de andere bizarre uitkomst van het proces tegen de Reuzegommers.

Men moet voorzichtig omgaan met de scheiding der machten, in de eerste plaats Justitie. De redenen die hebben geleid tot beide uitspraken hebben waarschijnlijk niet willen ingaan op de emotionele trend die blijft (terecht) leven in de publieke opinie.

Het blijft in beide gevallen moeilijk om een verdedigbaar causaal verband te zoeken, die het denkpatroon van de rechtspraak  op een "transparente" kan helpen volgen.

Het is ook  verkeerd morele overwegingen te ondermijnen via niet ondersteunende interpretaties. Argumenten ivm. klassejustitie zijn ongepast. Wat opnieuw op de helling is komen te staan is het vertrouwen in bestuur in het algemeen. De Belgische verbrokkeling heeft geleid tot een algemene vertrouwensbreuk.

De vermeningvuldiging van beleidcentra en de afbouw van hierarchie hebben een negatieve mutiplicator in het leven geroepen.

De moeder van Sanda heeft het juist uitgedrukt " laat de ziel van Sanda Dia rusten"...het gaat uiteindelijk om respect.

SOCIALIMES BELGES

Le parti socialiste belge a joué un role essentiel dans la société . Historiquement il a été le champion du progrès et de la justice sociale .

Malheureusement il a aussi créé un état dans l'état en Wallonie. Le clientélisme et une corruption structurelle intervenus sont à l'origine du déclin Wallon en Belgique. De Liege à Mons, le pays est maintenant traversé par la coulée d'un tissus nocif qui entraine tout sur son passage. Cette diagonale triste affecte l'environnement, l'habitat et la pensée . Elle entraîne surtout des reflexes qui freinent  l'innovation .

Le parti socialiste Wallon est devenu un lobby qui privilégie un provincialisme étroit, genre RTL, pour qui la Vesdre misérabiliste est le Nirvana perdu.

Il devient donc difficile de séduire l'investisseur dans une région dont le Gille de Binche est le roi. Dans ces conditions, réclamer une semaine de travail de quatre jours ne profite qu'à l'accélération du négatif et à l'accréditation des clichés désobligeants.

Le PS et la FGTB devraient s'entendre davantage avec leurs homologues Flamands (KO après l'incident Rousseau) , voir mème suivre de près la politique du gouvernement Macron, dans lequel figurent des personnalités d'obédience socialiste, "éclairées". 

Paul Magnette devrait se départir du style André Flahaut. Son programme électoral prend un coup de vieux dès avant le départ. Une correction s'impose sans quoi le parti socialiste deviendra le refuge pour ceux à qui la globalisation fait peur.

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT

Russia has a long tradition of often boring novels. Neither does it excel in "qualitative" easing of tensions. The history is mostly unpleasant, packed with paranoia and an occasional short-lived pause. Most democratic-inclined leaders--with the exception of George W. Bush--were sceptic of Moscow's praise and all too mindful of its threats.

Since his accession to power, Putin's early reserve has totally disappeared. The world is confronted with his brand of pure political and military brutalism.  The EU is rightly worried, as the nefarious free-lancers applaud, the Chinese watch and in America, the Republicans keep betraying what is left of self-respect .

Europeans must quit their usual "wait and see" posture, since a war is no longer speculation but a conceivability. There is no excuse for countries not to spend at least 2% of their GDP on NATO defense. This ratio is already too timid. It is nevertheless an unwelcome development to have to revisit the war and peace balance that is tilting in the wrong direction.

Obviously all this occurs also in the shadow of Trump and in the midst of conflicts that multiply like cancer cells. NATO has to review its forward strategy and its role in a ever wider spread of hybrid strategic situations. Europeans "own" this war on their territory and it is time to get ready rather than complain. The widow of Navalny gives Europeans a perfect example of strength under stress. The "performance" of the Belgian Michel/Lahbib duo (EU rotating presidency befalls her) is even more pathetic than usual.

Europeans can no longer avoid assuming cost, investment and strategy. Size no longer functions as an alibi for doing too little.

The West finds itself in a most uncomfortable situation. A  change of personnel in Washington would further undermine former trust and shared values. The Republicans have become a diaspora of the uninformed and the unloved. This toxic mix is as unpredictable as it is lethal. Crimes multiply. Punishment cannot be allowed to take a break .

ALEXEI NAVALNY

Ainsi fut fait...

Navalny a rencontré sa mort annoncée. S'en étonner est presque pervers. L'état-machine de Poutine apparaît lourd  mais il est redoutable dans ses achèvements.

Solzhenitsyn n'est plus là pour nous rappeler que l'enfer est d'autant plus pervers que lorsqu'il il devient discrèt.

KING LEAR IN THE WHITE HOUSE ?

President Biden is getting older and it shows.

There is a barrage of comments around his smallest misstep or verbal stumble. He was never the most convincing of communicators and under so much scrutiny, his normal verbal confusion becomes the talk of the day. Count on the Republicans to follow every step of the President under a malevolent magnifier. Everything that helps to distract from Trump's pile of sins is welcome.

Churchill, Mao and others got a pass. Their age was barely mentioned while none looked or acted that great. Biden is obviously self-conscious regarding his body language which occasionally traps him. The journalists only wait for the photo- op of the fall, the wrong step. They are vigilant regarding Trump's mafia as well, but the fodder they find is just repetitive and plain vulgar. The comments regarding Biden's health or psyche hurt because they go after the dignity of sorrow and aging.

The critics play with fire. Let them imagine for an instant another president under the same circumstances prevailing  worldwide. They should be ashamed for undermining a statesman whose only demerit is his age. Given the alternative another FDR is the better option, even if he comes in a wheelchair.

Shakespeare ends King Lear with a riddle: "We that are young shall never see so much nor live so long".  After all, age is a difficult compilation, not a prohibition.

ROBERT BADINTER

Le Garde des Sceaux de l'ère Mitterand est décédé.

Ce grand commis de l'Etat a fait abolir la peine de mort. Proche de François Mitterand, il représentait à la perfection une tradition d'intelligence et de culture propre à la France d'alors.

On ne peut être que désabusé quand les partants laissent un espace trop grand pour être occupé par les temps qui courent.

Les Badinter étaient sans doute les derniers descendants directs d'une France de la Raison.

PAUVRE EU

Cet hiver à Bruxelles/poubelle, ou les chiens, les petits chantiers et les trotinettes font la loi, est plus triste que jamais. L'accumulation de négatifs devient insupportable. Ce siège des Institutions de l'UE est peu séduisant. S'ajoutent à celà les mauvaises nouvelles de partout qui agressent moral et patience. On parle de guerre en Europe comme si nous étions déjà dans les tranchées. L'hypothèse de conflit armé n'est plus un propos philosophique. Elle fait désormais partie des probabilités envisageables.

L'Europe est un continent fatigué, en manque d'à peu près tout ce qui pourrait épater ou motiver. Silicone valley est ailleurs. On doit souhaiter que Paris réusisse son ambition Olympique et nous change quelques jours de la morosité.

Malheureusement les petits conflits comme les grands risquent de faire mal, en premier lieu à l'Europe. Il convient aussi de maitriser l'impatience ou les généralisations qui commencent à se manifester ci et là. Israel inspire une antipathie qui risque de devenir structurelle. L'Ukraine ennuie, déjà. Si Trump sort gagnant des élections présidentielles, l'Amérique pourrait bien vivre un changement fondamental dans ses alliances et dans sa philosophie politique sur le dos des Européens.

On entre dans l'algoritme de la peur. L'Europe qui épatait n'est plus. L'Amérique qui séduisait ne tient qu'à un fil, guetté par l'àge. Les francs tireurs s'amusent...le Secrétaire d'Etat américain est partout, les Européens sont nulle part.

Démocratie oblige, l'Europe  overdose en scrutins qui n'arrangeront rien et risquent surtout de multiplier la "fake news " et de grossir les rangs des mécontents. Ce nihilisme ne profite qu'à la Russie et à ses vassaux. Poutine devient le grand rassembleur des raleurs et frustrés. Le malaise agricole se nourrit de celà, de vouloir continuer de considérer le lopin comme une référence économique. La solidarité peut être considérée si elle est animée par le concept du progrès. Dans le cas contraire elle est une forme de charité qui prolonge l'agonie.

Est-ce que nous sommes terminaux ? Sans doute, si nous reculons devant des choix difficiles dans les domaines militaire, politique et économique. L'Europe doit retrouver le chemin du laboratoire et de la créativité. Paris et Londres affichent encore complet, à juste titre. Certes ce sont des métropoles qui comptent aussi leur "temps imparfait", mais quand le verbe reste entier, il est encore perfectible. Si une greffe (nécessaire) est prescrite, le rejet peut  reculer. 

AN AMERICAN SPLIT SCREEN

The current state of the American run-up to the presidential election can be bewildering. Two older men fight over ...what? The door key? Rest assured that Trump made duplicates of all keys before he left the White House.

We are left with one candidate who is "too much" and another who looks "too old". Nevertheless, watching age, with its humiliations, is still more sustainable than having to endure the lies and vagaries from an unhinged creature cavorting in a lagoon out of some horror flick.

Both candidates are becoming more boring by the day but Trump is adding disbelief to his many faults. One looks on as the world gets more complex. Fortunately we are still safer in Biden's hands. Let's imagine how all these difficult situations would fare in the hands of the Joker.  How frightening to project for just a moment the Republican deranged Trumpers at the helm? North Korea would look almost serene compared to America's madhouse.

Biden will never be the thrill of the day but he knows how to channel the wiser policies and to project measure in the chaos.  Under a Trump administration the fools would rule, yet again. It feels as if many are becoming more aware of the approaching menace. The numbers--employment, inflation, interest rates--start to have an effect.

Many still consider that a Trump come back is unavoidable. Actually he is becoming his own worst enemy. Having neither self-control or diplomatic skills, he is over-intrusive and might very well torpedo his own campaign. He fits in with the junk-food he craves and with the flock of miserable fans he still fools.

President Biden must stay the course and age graciously.  He will have to ignore the barrage of mud that is being readied in the GOP kitchens, not a pleasant prospect, but in "this" America, better be warned.
